Abstract: The intrinsic characteristics and the important roles of sketching in the form design processes were analyzed, the product form design research method based on the sketch cognitive analysis was put forward. Through studied on the mechanism of creative design generation in the memory system, the relationship between sketches and design activities were explored. Taking the form design of children's mobile-phone as an example, the product form design cognitive experiment was carried out. In this experiment protocol analysis was used to obtain design information during the design processes. Then the design behavior, cognitive activities and thinking of experienced industrial designers and novices were compared and analyzed. All above discussions were conducive to rules of product form innovation design, provided the references to form design education and lay the foundation for development of the computer-aided industrial design system.
