Abstract: A method of fixture planning is discussed in the process of computer-aided fixture design (CAFD), and various kinds of factors from the conceptual design stage to structure design stage are considered. A new concept of fixture unit configuration planning is proposed., and then the generation and optimization of alternative fixture structure schemes are discussed in detail given a set of fixed locating surfaces. Therefore a new “top-down” design approach for fixture design automation is provided by this design strategy. Finally an application example is given to show and verify the concept and method proposed in the paper.
