Abstract: The tabular layouts of article characteristics describe standardization and regularization information of product, and can expediently implement the product variant design and variant response of downstream process. According to the Computer Integrated Product Engineering (CIPE) philosophy and method, making the CAD system SolidEdge as application tool, the process of variant design based on tabular layouts of article characteristics principle is analyzed. A new method is presented to implement the variant design. Firstly, the method takes advantages of Excels table-process function to establish tabular layouts of article characteristics in it. Secondly, through redeveloping the variable table function of SolidEdge and integrating Excel with SolidEdge, the products variant design is implemented. Finally, an application example is given to verify the feasibility of the method.
