Abstract: To implement product family design for mass customization in the industry of machine tool, Internet-based and customer-driven customization system of internal grinder family was proposed. Two processes were included in the system: constructing product family model and customizing specific product. In order to model product family and customize product, modular-based design method and scale-based design method were used, and some key technologies including tabular layouts of article characteristics, Sockets and parametric CAD were utilized. Products would be shown in the form of VRML in the end. The main difference between modular-based and scale-based method was that individual modules and scaled variant. With the modular-based method, design in product family would be implemented by changes of individual modules. With the scale-based method, design variants were taken as adjustable factors to complete product in product family design.
